VLT

stands for Very Large Telescope. The astronomers at VLT are peering deep into the cosmos searching for clues to the nature & origin of the universe. Somehow, I think they should have spent a little more time on the name. I mean, Very Large Telescope was the best they could come up with !?

The VLT is not as cutting edge as it once was. The future generation of telescopes being developed are reffered to as ELT's, short for Extremely Large Telescopes. One of the designs in development is named OWL, short for OverWhelmingly Large.
